Thank you for your thoughtful response.

I want to begin by agreeing absolutely that "the liberal masculine subject is a privileged subject, when considered in relation to other subjects." Not surprisingly, perhaps, I also agree that "the particular allocation of privilege to a particular kind of subject is residual." And I quite like your alteration, suggesting as it does that the liberal masculine subject "could be 'staving off or controlling the irrationality of a system that he knows (more or less consciously)' has allocated this privilege to him only arbitrarily, 'staving off' the knowledge that there is no 'rational' reason, in terms of the logic of capital, why the position of privilege shouldn’t go to someone else." I like this better because it suggests not only the fear of losing the privilege that the LMS has, but that the LMS is also staving off the knowledge that there is no unique or particular attribute that merits his privilege, thus preventing awareness that the LMS is simply fulfilling a structural role necessitated by capitalism that has no interest in him as a unique meritorious person, but only in his temporary capacity as an exploitive place-holder.

I look forward to your post on Dialectic of Enlightenment, women and the "primitive".
